English Year 5
What are the aims of the Year 5 English units?
Our Year 5 English units provide a platform for pupils to build on their reading and writing stamina. They will deepen their understanding of purpose, audience, language, and layout of texts. Through the PKC, children are exposed to a wider range of poetry and books, and both their reading and writing will be becoming more sufficiently fluent and effortless. Both grammar and vocabulary is taught explicitly within the context of the lesson, and our children are guided to understand the nuances in language and literature.
What can teachers expect from our Year 5 English units?
Our knowledge-rich curriculum will help pupils deepen their ability to apply prior background knowledge from PKC history, geography and science into writing outcomes, ensuring correct tone, voice, and writing style related to each discipline, with a deeper emphasis on academic vocabulary. Additionally, children are exposed to further classical texts, traditional tales, folktales, and modern literature to inspire writing.
The PKC English Year 5 units cover:
- Letter: ‘Silent Music: A Story from Baghdad’
- Non-chronological: Calligraphy
- Newspaper report: The French Revolution
- Narrative: ‘Oliver Twist’
