Geography Year 6

Our Year 6 geography curriculum builds on all of the knowledge children have established throughout their primary geography education and offers many opportunities for children to think in a disciplinary way about subject content. At this point in the primary curriculum, we want children to be able to study geographical issues and use their knowledge and understanding to analyse and interpret information, to think geographically about places, people and environments. Challenging concepts such as society, economics and politics are introduced, building on children’s understanding of communities, trade and how countries are governed. The Year 6 geography curriculum aims to equip children with the knowledge they need to begin to understand the global issues we face today.

In Year 6 children are expected to think deeply about issues such as air pollution, climate change, waste and litter and how these issues are dealt with at a government and local level. Building on their knowledge of data from Year 5, children will look at maps of the world that show Gross Domestic Product and also Human Development Index data. They will reflect upon what data is available to geographers and how they use it to draw conclusions. Studying African geography challenges stereotypes and assumptions whilst introducing important issues such as food security and desertification. South American geography introduces children to the Inca and the challenge of geography when building an empire, agriculture and industry in Brazil and the Amazon Rainforest. At the end of the Year 6 curriculum children will study globalisation; the ways in which economics, politics and society have to different extents become globalised and what that means for people and our planet. This unit encourages children to think critically using their wealth of knowledge and to confidently voice their thoughts with a strong sense of identity and purpose.

• Globalisation

We equip our partner schools with the necessary resources to effectively teach the PKC geography Year 6 curriculum to their pupils. Resources include lesson plans, curriculum maps, subject overviews, and subject and unit rationales.

Alongside the above resources, we provide every PKC Geography teacher with:

To gain a better understanding of the geography curriculum, we encourage all geography subject leaders to attend our “Dive into geography” CPD series. These sessions include six pre-recorded videos followed by a live session with our curriculum team.
