Science Year 2
What are the aims of the Year 2 science curriculum?
The Year 2 science curriculum builds on foundational learning from Early Years and Year 1 to further explain the world around us. Children will develop their knowledge and understanding of the human body, animals, plants, the world around us and beyond. They will start to think scientifically about electricity, asking and answering questions about how electricity works. The Year 2 curriculum develops scientific enquiry skills that will continue to develop throughout the curriculum including observing changes, noticing patterns, and asking questions. Vitally, our science curriculum explicitly teaches ambitious vocabulary so that children can accurately describe and explain the scientific phenomena they observe.
What can teachers expect from our Year 2 science curriculum?
Through the PKC, pupils are equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to understand and think deeply about different elements within the discipline of science. As children work through the curriculum they will learn more and remember more enabling them to make more complex and interesting connections.
Our science curriculum introduces pupils to substantive and disciplinary knowledge within these units:
- The human body
- Living things and their environments
- Electricity
- Plants
- Materials and matter
- Astronomy

To gain a better understanding of our science curriculum, we encourage all science subject leaders to attend our “Dive into Science” CPD series. These sessions include six pre-recorded videos followed by a live session with our curriculum team. By attending this session you will be able to apply our science curriculum with confidence within your schools.
