What will your pupils learn about?
Our knowledge-rich English units empower children to utilise a rich-reading vocabulary and to apply background knowledge to enhance their writing. Through promoting a love of reading and writing, our children leave with the knowledge and skills needed to express themselves effectively. In our PKC English units, we have interweaved grammar and vocabulary to be explicitly taught within the context of a lesson. The units have been created to deepen children’s understanding of purpose, audience, language, and layout of texts.
During the course of these units, pupils will be exposed to classical texts, traditional tales and folktales, such as Issun Boshi, Hansel and Gretel, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Oliver Twist, and The Railway Children.
Additionally, our knowledge-rich curriculum allows pupils to apply prior background knowledge from history, geography, science and art into writing outcomes. By doing this we ensure that our pupils use the correct tone, voice and writing style related to each discipline.
How we support subject leaders
We encourage English subject leaders to attend our “Dive into English” professional development session. This session helps senior leaders, subject leaders and teachers to establish a sound understanding of our knowledge-rich English units and how to best implement them in the primary classroom.
